White Lotus is our physical home to practice Jiu Jitsu. In our humble opinion, Jiu Jitsu to us should be practiced playfully, painlessly, and precisely. Most of us are hobbyist with day jobs that don’t need to have robo-neck the day after training. White Lotus bloomed in Milwaukee Wisconsin for those hobbyist practitioners that love to train, but don’t need to “win” every roll.
We take great lengths to foster community amongst our members. White lotus doubles as a co-working space with wifi and office supplies. We offer a lounge complete with access to Netflix, prime, HBO, etc. Members also enjoy 24/7 access to all the dojo amenities. Additionally, we have weekly gatherings to watch fighting/grappling, popular shows, celebrations and game nights.
White Lotus is affiliated with the BJJ Globetrotter’s organization with Joshua having coached at many camps around the world. We believe in sharing our accumulated knowledge with both our members and traveling friends. Membership is catered to the experienced grappler of 2.5 years or a blue belt. Our classes are all currently principle based and therefore to get the most out of them, our students need to know the basics. First 2 drop ins are free and all schools for open mats are welcome. Our membership model is affordable and pliable offering both full time and auxiliary memberships. If you are interested in joining follow the link to application below
It is a place where members learn together and share their knowledge. It is a physically small venue because we want to keep class sizes small. We believe that skill transmission is best done in smaller groups where people are comfortable to speak up, ask questions and contribute. All members have acquired a certain amount of knowledge from which we can all learn from. Classes have a coach that guides the conversation, sets up realistic drills, and then go on to roll.
Our founders Meghan Wagner and Joshua Janis have spent most of their lives in Martial arts. Meghan is a purple belt in BJJ and a 3rd degree black belt in Tae kwon Do. Her Masters in Education and career as a teacher and non profit program director have helped build her ability to coach and help the team.
Joshua is a Black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with over 19 years of experience. He has multiple videos on BJJ Fanatics, has coached all over the world with BJJ Globetrotters, and has been coaching since 2012. His career, coaching leaders with MyOdisee, has also helped build him into an excellent communicator of the principles of BJJ.
What is an “experienced” grappler?
Membership is limited to those who have been training 2.5 years or are a blue belt. This is done so the coaches can tailor the classes and information for the more advanced ear.
What is open source learning?
In an open source learning environment members are encouraged to gather as much information from as many sources as possible and share it with other members. Information is not limited to just one coach's curriculum. The coaches at White Lotus act as facilitators. They show concepts and encourage communication between members to problem solve for the individual's body.
What does it mean to be affiliated with the BJJ Globetrotters?
Instead of the classic lineage/hierarchical structure, we are a decentralized affiliation working in a flat structure with no “head instructor” to follow. We learn and support each other. Our mats are always open to guests of members and all traveling BJJ Globetrotters members. Our belt promotions will be done by a board of black belts.
What hours will White Lotus be open?
The mats will be open 24/7 for White Lotus members when classes are not going on. Class schedules will be updated frequently as more members decide to start classes. Additionally, you can also workout in the gym anytime and utilize the lounge.
Who are the coaches/facilitators?
Any approved member can become a coach and can coach topics on Jiu Jitsu or Jiu Jitsu adjacent things like yoga, kettlebells, philosophy etc. The first two coaches are BJJ Black Belt Joshua Janis and BJJ Purple belt Meghan Wagner
